Details on the art and story behind the controversy:
Up for auction we have three lots in relation to Siya Oum’s cover art for Chandra #3.
IDW publishes the official MTG comics and these stories are canon with the MTG universe. This is also the first time we’re seeing Tibalt published (on a cover) and all his MTG card art has been digital.
Part of the reason I’m auctioning these lots is because of the story behind the art. As some of you may know, when the art was shown for Previews (the comic book catalog), there was an online explosion of upset fans. Many felt that the image of Tibalt standing over Chandra was against the direction WotC is moving with MTG characters and lore. The cover ended up with edits then getting completely redone (see details below). Check out a couple of the videos here:

The art is being sold in three separate lots:
Lot A – The outrage lot: This lot includes the original pencils (left) and the original inks on bluelines (right). The inked blueline is what was used as the art that was sent to previews. This is the art that sparked a big debate online. When IDW sent over the cover idea to Siya, they gave some ideas on layouts and she did several thumbnails. This was the image that was chosen by WotC for the cover. Siya did the art and made corrections and it was exactly what they asked for and it was sent off to Previews. Once the image hit the catalog there was a lot of chatter about Tibalt being introduced, but also about many fans distaste with the choices on the cover. IDW contacted back shortly thereafter that WotC wanted some adjustments made to the cover to make Chandra appear less defeated. You may see in the pencils that Chandra’s face is just ever so slightly changed to make her look more mad. But after a bit of talking it was decided they wanted more changes, which leads us to
Lot B – The redraw lot: This lot is the redraws of the original concept and includes the completed inks on the left, the approved sketch in the middle (this one is on thin copy paper), then some corrections on the right including a small copy paper with blueline printout and inked tail corrections and a half penciled page with character and tail correction. This was the second pass at the cover with changes made to help change the feel behind the cover. Unfortunately, even with all the corrections, it ended up being decided to scrap the whole idea and go to
Lot C – The published art lot: It was eventually decided they wanted the entire previous idea scrapped and one of the other layouts was chosen and a whole new cover was drawn. This lot includes the completed cover (pencils and inks) with a printed copy of the pencils and a printed copy of the approved layouts.
First 3 photos are of the lots so you can see what is in each then scans of each item are included afterwards
The book is released this week and can be found at your local comic shop.
